Helping the “Forgotten Soldiers” Story by Kathleen Walter/CBS 12 News
BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. — A local not-for profit group is one step closer to helping hundreds of local military men and women stationed abroad.
The Forgotten Soldiers Outreach is a Lake Worth based non-profit that sends packages of life’s essentials to deployed soldiers.
Saturday night, they hosted a party and benefit at Alabama Joe’s in Boynton Beach to support “Operation Show you Care”, a fundraising drive to help continue a mission.
Even though President Obama scaled back troops in the Middle East, there are still thousands stationed in Afghanistan and Iraq who still are need of help.
John Oldham the Community Relations Manager for Forgotten Soldiers Outreach said ” a lot of people seem to think that we still don’t have a lot of service members in war.”
“Just to know that Afghanistan has 38,000 troop managers, it’s important to let them know we are thinking about them.” He said.
U.S. Navy Veteran Jeff Dapkus talked about a care package he received 10 years ago from Forgotten Soldiers Outreach and he got emotional from the memory of a random act of kindness by total strangers.
“Just the simple things that people gave you. Toilet paper, toothpaste,and deodorant… it just really helped. It gave me a sense of home.” Dapkus said.
The group hoped to raise 5,000 dollars. That money will fund the shipping cost of about 200 care packages.
